You’re on the right track if you’re thinking about pursuing a career in one of Ontario’s skilled trades. Skilled trades are in high demand, offering rewarding career opportunities. Today, we’re breaking down how you can become licensed in your chosen trade in Ontario in a way that’s easy to understand. Let’s dive in!
Certificate of Qualification:
A Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) is a special paper that shows you are ready and able to do a specific job or trade in Ontario. Having this certificate makes you stand out when looking for jobs or clients.
For jobs that you must have a certificate to do legally in Ontario, you need to get this certificate and update it every year.
You can still get one for other jobs without a certificate. It’s a good idea to check which jobs allow you to get this certificate, even if it’s unnecessary.
Step 1: Identify Your Trade
First, you need to know which trade you’re interested in. In Ontario, trades are categorized into four sectors:
- Construction,
- Industrial,
- Motive Power, and
- Service.
Each sector has different trades, such as electrician, plumber, automotive service technician, and hairstylist, to name a few. Find the one that matches your interests and skills.
Step 2: Understand the Certification Requirement
Once you’ve picked a trade, it’s essential to understand whether it requires certification. Some trades are “compulsory,” meaning you must be certified to work legally in that trade in Ontario. Others are “voluntary,” where certification is optional but recommended. Check the Ontario College of Trades’ website https://www.skilledtradesontario.ca/certification/certificate-of-qualification/ to see where your trade falls. Here is the list of compulsory trade:

Stage 3: Complete the Application Process
Once you’re confident that you meet the eligibility criteria, it’s time to fill out the application for your trade license. The application form is usually available on the website of the regulatory authority in charge of your industry. Ensure you accurately provide all the required information and submit any requested supporting documents.
Stage 4: Pay the Fees
Typically, there are costs involved in applying for and acquiring a trade license. These fees cover administrative costs, exam fees (if applicable), and other expenses related to the licensing process. Pay the required fees promptly to avoid delays in processing your application.
Stage 5: Await Approval
Waiting for regulatory body approval is the next step after submitting your application and meeting all requirements. Keep checking on the status of your application and exercise patience, as this process could take some time. Once approved, you’ll receive your trade license, which will allow you to practice your trade in Ontario legally.
